Apple could justifiably argue that it doesn’t want to publish information about vulnerabilities in RSR update patches until most users have had a chance to upgrade. They can also be used to more quickly mitigate certain security issues, such as issues that have been exploited or reported to exist “in the wild”. They provide important security improvements between software updates - for example, improvements to the Safari web browser, the WebKit framework stack, or other critical system libraries. Rapid Security Response is a new type of software release for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. In fact, there is a general guide for all Rapid Response issues published by Apple itself:
If you don’t receive an update notification, you can trigger RSR updates just as you would a standard iOS release by navigating to Settings > General > Software Update, If you’re running new beta software (see the ‘Way forward’ section at the end), you may need to unenroll your device before the RSR update appears.Īpple’s iOS 16.4.1(a) comes without release notes. iOS 15.7.5 is the most recent update to protect older devices, but Apple won’t be bringing the RSR update to iOS 15. iOS 16 discontinued support for the iPhone 6S and 7 range and the iPod Touch. So how did the first RSR go? not smoothly. RSR releases are the new way Apple will deliver dedicated security updates and they can be seen by the letter appended to the current release version. Apple iOS 16.4.1(a) is something completely new: the first Rapid Security Response (RSR) release for iPhone and iPad.
